What training have you had?

I have been trained by DONA International, which implements an international standard of care.  I am the mother of three, and have attended multiple childbirth and breastfeeding classes.  I am seeking my certification by the end of 2010. I participate in the Fenton La Leche League.

What is your philosophy about childbirth?

I believe that childbirth is a natural process.  I believe that a womans body knows what to do.  I firmly believe in a woman being an active part of the decision making process when it comes to what she wants for her labor and delivery.

What do you consider the most important elements of care when working as a doula?

Ensuring that the mother feels cared for, making sure she is aware of everything going on, and over all having a positive experience of the birth of the new baby.

What comfort measures do you use for relaxation and pain relief?

There are five catagories that comfort measures fall into:      1) actions and behaviors that give emotional and psychological support;  2) mental activities that divert attention from pain or focus attention on thoughts or images that increase mental and physical relaxation; 3) physical activites such as relaxed breathing, muscular relaxation exercises, movement, position changes, use of water, heat or cold;  4) touch, including massage, pressure and counterpressure;  5) rhytmic activities, music, chanting, singing, etc.

At prenatal appointments we will discuss some techniques that you might find helpful during labor and delivery.
